New sewerage scheme with wastewater treatment plant - construction to begin in new year

Irish Water is committed to ending the discharge of approximately 160 wheelie bins of untreated sewage into Rutland Sound per day. To progress plans to build a new sewerage scheme including a wastewater treatment plant, Irish Water has submitted a planning application to Donegal County Council. The new plant will treat effluent from homes and businesses in the area and return the treated water safely to the environment.

Subject to statutory approvals Irish Water expects to commence construction in 2020 and the works will take approximately 14 months to complete.

Benefits and plans

The benefits the new wastewater treatment plant will bring to Burtonport include improved water quality in the receiving waters; enhanced local amenities and a platform for social and economic development. The new infrastructure has also been sized to facilitate future population growth.

Explaining in more detail why this project is essential for Burtonport, Colm Claffey Irish Water said: “Currently the wastewater entering the public sewer network in Burtonport discharges untreated to Rutland Sound. This discharge of untreated wastewater is unacceptable, threatens water quality and detracts from the amenity value of the area. This project is required to stop this practice which will benefit the environment as well as ensure social and economic development of the wider area.”

What is involved?

  • Provision of a new sewer to connect the existing sewer network to a new wastewater pumping station;
  • Construction of a new wastewater pumping station and 230m of new rising main to transport untreated wastewater to a new wastewater treatment plant;
  • Construction of a new wastewater treatment plant which will serve a population equivalent of approximately 300 people;
  • Connection to the existing outfall pipe to safely discharge treated wastewater to Rutland Sound.

This project forms part of Irish Water’s investment plan. Works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5 billion investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.
