Further progress made on the Howth Water Supply Scheme, safeguarding water supply for homes and businesses in the area

15 January 2021

Uisce Éireann working in partnership with Fingal County Council is progressing with essential works on the Howth water supply scheme in order to safeguard the water supply for homes and businesses in in the area in accordance with current Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions. This project will improve the security of the drinking water supply for the area and will allow for social and economic growth and development in Howth.

Almost 6 kilometres of watermain has already been constructed. The next section of the project involves the construction of new watermains along the R809 Warrenhouse Road in Baldoyle. This complex work which involves tunnelling the new watermain under the Howth DART railway line will start on Monday 18 January and is scheduled to be completed in 3 weeks. In order to facilitate the safe delivery of these works the south bound lane of the R809 Warrenhouse Road will be closed for the duration if the works. Diversions will be in place and local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

John Craddock Limited is delivering these essential works on behalf of Uisce Éireann in line with stringent COVID-19 protocols.

Speaking about the project, William McKnight, Uisce Éireann, said, “The construction of the new watermain in Howth is vital to ensure a safer and a more secure water supply to homes and businesses in the area and will also support the economic and social development of the area. The works in Howth form part of a significant investment of almost €22 million by Uisce Éireann to safeguard the water supply in Fingal. Upgrading the water infrastructure will ensure that customers in Howth, Malahide, Swords and Balbriggan will have a more reliable and secure supply which will result in fewer disruptions to their water supply. Uisce Éireann understands this type of work can be inconvenient and we will ensure our work crews make every effort to minimise any disruption these works may cause. We will continue to provide regular updates to businesses, elected representatives and the community as this important project progresses.

Uisce Éireann continues to work at this time, with our Local Authority partners, contractors and others to safeguard the health and well-being of both staff and the public and to ensure the continuity of critical drinking water and wastewater services.
