Full water service restored for customers in Carlow town
Restrictions were in place due to a fuel spill in the area
Irish Water confirms to customers in the Carlow town area that the Sion Cross Water Treatment Plant is now back in production. The temporary reduction in water pressure at night time will no longer be required as the plant is producing water that is fully compliant with Drinking Water Regulations. The restrictions were in place due to a fuel spill in the area. Irish Water has put in place a new process at the treatment plant to provide a specific barrier to hydrocarbons and to protect the public water supply.
Irish Water worked closely with the HSE, Carlow County Council and other agencies to ensure there was no risk to drinking water supplies. Irish Water wishes to reassure customers that following the work carried out by Irish Water, Carlow County Council, and in consultation with the HSE, that the town’s water supply is safe to drink.
Separate to Irish Water, work was carried out by the Environment Section of Carlow County Council to remediate the fuel spill to the river and lands upstream of the Sion Cross Water Treatment Plant.
As a precautionary measure at the time of the fuel spill, the Sion Cross Water Treatment Plant, which supplies part of Carlow town and surrounding areas, was shut down. While the Treatment Plant was closed for production, Carlow town continued to be supplied from alternative sources. It was necessary to introduce night-time restrictions to the supply, however, with the restoration of production at Sion Cross, these restrictions have been lifted.
Irish Water carried out tests in conjunction with the HSE to monitor the quality of water on an ongoing basis and worked closely with Carlow County Council and the other agencies to resolve this issue and restore a normal water supply as quickly as possible.
We would like to thank customers for their patience while work was carried out to restore a safe water supply to customers. Safeguarding the water supply and protecting public health is a key priority for Irish Water.
