Works will increase the security of supply and improve water quality

Irish Water working in partnership with Roscommon County Council is replacing over 2.4 kilometres of problematic water mains between Emmoo and Ballynacullia. The works will increase the security of supply and improve water quality. The works will commence next week and are being carried out as part of our national Leakage Reduction Programme.

Area where works will take place

The section of works will take place along the N63, north-west of Roscommon, leading on to a side road that connects to the L1806. The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these will be replaced as part of this improvement works. The works will be carried out on our behalf by Farran’s Construction Ltd and are expected to be completed by May 2019.

Dave Murphy, Regional Lead for the Leakage Reduction Programme

“Replacing these ageing water mains will not only reduce the high levels of leakage, but it will also improve security of water supply. We would like to thank local residents and businesses for their cooperation as we work together to deliver these improvements and Roscommon County Council for their continuing efforts in delivering this programme of works.”

Reduce bursts and water outages

Replacing old water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area and will eliminate existing leaks. This will reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.

Works may involve short-term water shut offs

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water shut offs.
Traffic management may be in place during this time and there may be local diversions in place for the duration of the works. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

“We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause. We will continue to work with the community to minimise disruption,” added Dave.
