Crews to upgrade the water network in Mell, North Drogheda

02 August 2022

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Louth County Council, is progressing an important project to upgrade and improve the watermain network at Mell, North Drogheda. These works are to be delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Development Programme. The delivery of these important works will support social and economic growth, including planned housing development, and will significantly improve the capacity and operational performance of the existing watermain network, benefitting local businesses and residents.

The project, which is due to begin in the coming days, will involve the installation of almost 900 meters of new state-of-the-art pipes at Mell, North Drogheda. These works will involve the construction of a new watermain between the Hill of Rath and Rosehall roundabouts along the R166.

Speaking about the benefits of this essential project Padraig Hanly, Regional Delivery Lead at Uisce Éireann said: “This project will improve the capacity of the existing water main in the area, improving performance and reducing demands on the current network. We are delighted that project is being delivered to support existing and future developments within the community.”

Padraig added, “On behalf of Uisce Éireann, I’d like thank the local community in advance for their patience and cooperation as traffic management will be necessary as the project progresses. However, based on previous experiences, we know that the short-term inconvenience will be overshadowed by the long-term benefits.”

To facilitate the safe delivery of works, there will be local traffic management in place during construction. For the works along the R166 a road margin/shoulder closure will be in place with traffic management to facilitate two-way traffic. For works at the Hill of Rath and Rosehall Roundabouts a stop/go controlled system will be in place. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times, including traffic to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by GMC Utilities Ltd and may involve some short-term water interruptions to the water supply. The project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and work crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption that this essential project may cause. Standard working hours will be between 9.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday with no work anticipated on weekends or public holidays.
