Crews to resign Cremully’s bursts to the annals

Pipelaying crews are on their way to Roscommon’s Cremully to deliver a much more reliable water supply to local residents. 

More than 1.5km of old pipes between Cremully and Aghagad will be replaced by the end of September promising customers fewer bursts and outages.  

The works along the L7101 will not only reduce the number of supply interruptions but it will improve water quality and reduce the amount of drinking water lost by leakage. 

Declan Cawley, Uisce Éireann’s Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead is looking forward to getting the project off the ground. Preparatory works will commence shortly before removal of the old pipes begins in early August. 

“Working with Roscommon County Council, we have prioritised leakage reduction in the areas that need it most. This project in Cremully will ensure that locals are not inconvenienced by regular bursts and the works will safeguard the area’s water supply for the future.”

In order to carry out these essential works, a road closure along the L7101 is necessary and temporary diversions will be in place from early August until the end of September. However, local and emergency traffic will be facilitated at all times. 

The pipelaying may also result in short term interruptions to the supply for local customers and the project team will ensure a minimum of 48 hours’ notice is given of all planned outages. 

“We are aware that works of this nature can cause some disruption. We would like to assure the public that, together with Roscommon County Council and our contractor Farrans Construction, we are working to minimise any inconvenience. This project will be completed in advance of planned road overlay works for the area,” said Declan.

Uisce Éireann is working with local Authorities across the country to reduce leakage and provide customers with a more reliable water supply.  Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was 38% and now we are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the Leakage Reduction Programme. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
