Crews to replace 1km of watermains in Rathpeacon

11 August 2022

Irish Water, working in partnership with Cork County Council, is replacing 1km of problematic watermains in Rathpeacon which will provide a more secure supply for the area.

The project will commence in late August and forms part of Irish Water’s National Leakage Reduction Programme. The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

The works, being carried out by Ward and Burke Limited on behalf of Irish Water, will take place along Boreen Dearg Road, from its junction with Rathpeacon Road to the Old Mallow Road and are expected to be completed on mid-October.

Outlining the benefits the mains replacement will bring, Paul Moroney from Irish Water, explained: “Replacement of watermains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground. The overall result will be a better water supply for the people of Rathpeacon."

Paul added: “To facilitate the safe delivery of the upgrades, a road closure will be required along Boreen Dearg Road, however, local and emergency access will be maintained at all times."

Works will be limited to short sections to minimise any impact on customers.  During this project there may be some short-term water outages and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice before any planned water outages."

We understand that road works and water outages can be inconvenient, but our crews will make every effort to minimise disruption to local communities as we continue to improve the water supply in Cork and progress the National Leakage Reduction Programme.”

To complete the works in a safe and efficient manner, a road closure is required along Boreen Dearg Road (L-27823), from late August to late October. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

The suggested diversion route for eastbound traffic from Monard, is continue southbound via Rathpeacon Road to West Link Business Park. At the first roundabout take the exit for Rathpeacon and continue northbound via Old Mallow Road to its junction with Boreen Dearg Road.

This project is one example of how Irish Water is working in partnership with Local Authorities to reduce leakage and provide a more reliable water supply.  Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was 38%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030. For more information on reducing leaks visit our National Leakage Reduction Programme page.
