Cavan Town residents set to enjoy better quality drinking water following water mains replacement works

17 December 2020

Businesses and residents in Cavan Town are enjoying improved water supply and less disruptions due to bursts, leakages and outages following the completion of water mains replacement works by Uisce Éireann working in partnership with Cavan County Council.

Almost 1,300 metres of old and damaged pipes on Main Street, Bridge Street, Town Hall Street, Thomas Ashe Street and Church Street were replaced. Decommissioning works also took place along Kinnypottle. These works will deliver benefits to local customers such as a more secure water supply and a reduction in leaks and bursts. The water quality in the network will also be improved by replacing old cast iron and lead pipes from the public water network with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes.

The works are part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme which will reduce the high level of leakage across the country by fixing or replacing ageing water mains. The contract was carried out by Farran’s Construction Limited on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Explaining further what was involved, Uisce Éireann’s Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead Declan Cawley said: “The works involved the decommissioning and replacement of water mains in Cavan Town and include laying water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting them to the customer’s water supply. We carried out the works on a phased basis to minimise the disruption to businesses and the public.

Declan added “I understand the inconvenience these necessary works may have caused and I would like to thank local residents and businesses for their cooperation during the works programme.

Residents and businesses in the areas can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working in partnership with Cavan County Council to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated with over 63,000km of water pipe in Ireland. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in precious water being lost but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2019 it was 42% and we are currently on course to achieve a national leakage rate of 38% by 2021

The National Leakage Reduction Programme helps provide a more reliable water supply to Irish communities, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality. Its delivery means investment of over €500 million between 2017 and 2021 to reduce leakage and replace old pipes on the water network.
