5 separate projects in Co. Laois to address the issue of leakage in the county

Irish Water, working in partnership with Laois County Council, today revealed details of 5 separate projects it is undertaking in Co. Laois in order to address the issue of leakage in the county. The projects are:

  1. Replacement of backyard watermains and provision of new connections in St. Fintain’s Terrace, Mountrath
  2. Replacement of ageing watermains on Shannon Street, Mountrath
  3. Replacement of ageing backyard watermains in St. Joseph’s Terrace, Mountmellick
  4. Replacing ageing watermains in Erkindale Drive, Durrow
  5. Replacing of ageing watermains in St. FIntan’s Terrace, Co. Laois

Works will improve water pressure

Once complete, the benefits of these projects for the local community will include a more reliable water supply for all customers. This means reduced leakage on the network which will improve water pressure to homes and businesses. Operational and maintenance costs will also be reduced as the network operation will require less maintenance.

Part of our national Leakage Reduction Programme

The work is part of our national Leakage Reduction Programme which, over the next 4 years, will see €500 million invested to reduce the level of leakage across the country by fixing and replacing aging water mains. This will ensure a safe, reliable water supply which is vital for our health, our environment and our growing population and economy.

Existing pipes will be replaced with new modern plastic pipes

Existing pipes will be replaced with new modern high density polyethylene plastic pipes. The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to the customers’ property boundary and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

Details of Work

St. Fintan’s Terrace, Mountrath

The works involve the decommissioning of 1.1 kms of aged and problematic back yard mains. 757 metres of new water mains will be constructed along the public road and new service connections will be installed from the new water main to each customer’s property. Possible short-term water shut offs

We have planned the works in short sections in order to limit impact on customers. Traffic management will be required for some of the works. Works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water shut offs. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.
