We have undertaken a number of actions to address malodours

Irish Water has undertaken a number of actions to address malodours in response to complaints from the community in Belgooly. The local sewer network has been investigated for blockages and the wastewater treatment plant has also been investigated for malfunctions.

In addition, Irish Water and the Design/Build/Operate (DBO) Contractor have carried out extensive inspections of the wastewater treatment plant and, consequently, believe they have located the source of an odour issue.

Work has been carried out in recent weeks to bring the plant into compliance and eliminate the odour issue. This work involved a number of actions as follows:

  • Balance Tank cleaned out;
  • Extra Odour Control Units installed on stream 3 & 4;
  • Additional Blower installed on stream 4;
  • Media has been removed from stream 4 and placed in stream 3;
  • Install and Commission Return Activated Sludge (RAS) Line;
  • Removal of septic liquor from Primary Tanks;
  • Reseeding of treatment units;
  • Clean out of holding tank;
  • Check of Balance Tank pumps and bringing the balance tank back into operation.

 All of these actions are now complete since Monday, 17 August. Irish Water believes that these actions will improve the operation of the plant and address the odour issue emanating from the plant. Irish Water continues to work with the DBO contractor at this time to ensure that operation processes at the plant are improved and maintained, so that the plant is operated effectively.

We acknowledge and are investigating reports from the local community of odours emanating from the plant in recent days. We wish to apologise to those who are experiencing odour issues in the vicinity of the plant and assure them that we are working to address this matter.
