Ballycastle customers enjoying enhanced water quality following connection to Ballina supply

06 January 2021

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Mayo County Council, are happy to announce that works to connect the Ballycastle Public Water Supply to the Ballina Regional Water Supply Scheme (Lacken Reservoir) are due to be complete next week. Six kilometres of new interconnecting mains pipe from the existing Lacken Reservoir to the Ballycastle Public Water Supply have been laid and the old water treatment plant at Ballycastle decommissioned. These works will ensure that customers in the Ballycastle area will enjoy a better quality and more resilient water supply into the future.

To allow for the final installation the 360 customers benefiting from this essential project may experience some short term water outages on Monday, January 11 and Tuesday, January 12 2021. Updates are available on the Uisce Éireann website supply and service section at www.water.ie or by telephone to the customer care helpline on 1800 278 278.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann continues to work in partnership with Mayo County Council to upgrade the existing water network for the benefit of Mayo customers.

Source Civil Limited carried out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Commenting on the project Martin Temple, Uisce Éireann said: “The decommissioning of the old Ballycastle Water Treatment Plant and the connection of the water supply to the Ballina Regional Water Supply Scheme is a red letter day for the people of Ballycastle. They can now enjoy an enhanced quality of drinking water, improved security of water supply and these works will also allow for further growth and development in this area.

We would like to thank customers who were impacted during these vital upgrade works for their patience and cooperation throughout.

Uisce Éireann continues to work at this time with our Local Authority partners, contractors and others to safeguard the health and well-being of both staff and the public and to ensure the continuity of critical drinking water and wastewater services. Uisce Éireann would like to remind people to follow the HSE COVID-19 advice and ensure frequent handwashing.
