Abbey Street, Cavan Town: Next stop on Leakage Reduction journey

03 March 2023

Before this summer starts homes and businesses in Abbey Street, Cavan Town will be guaranteed a more reliable water supply. These works follow on from other recently completed works in Main Street, Wolfe Tone Street and Bridge Street, St. Mary’s Terrace, Billis, Drumlark and St Phelim’s Place, Cavan.

Uisce Éireann crews will arrive next week in Cavan Town to begin work on replacing 200m of old damaged water mains on Abbey Street which are susceptible to regular bursts.

The new pipes along Abbey Street will reduce the instances of bursts, water outages and eliminate existing leaks giving customers much more confidence in their water supply.

Uisce Éireann’s Networks Regional Lead Declan Cawley is looking forward to getting this vital project underway.

Fewer bursts and less leakage mean a stronger supply for homes and businesses. These improvements to the water network in Cavan Town are essential in providing a safe, secure and more reliable water supply, now and into the future.”

Farrans Construction will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann which will be completed by this April.

The essential works may involve some short-term water interruptions, but the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned interruptions.

To facilitate the works, there will be a traffic management system in place on Abbey Street however the areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact. These works will be primarily carried out during daytime hours; however, night works will be required to support a small section of the works which will be completed under a road closure. Locals can be assured that local and emergency traffic will be accommodated at all times.

Declan added: “We understand that this type of work is inconvenient, and our crews will make every effort to minimise disruption to the local people."

"These works are essential for Cavan Town, and the long-term benefits will far outweigh any short-term inconvenience. We thank the community for their patience and co-operation.”

Customers can call the Uisce Éireann customer helpline on 1800 278 278 for any questions concerning the works.

This project forms part of Uisce Eireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme and will help us achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
