A safer and more reliable water supply for homes and businesses in Ferns
As leakage reduction works planned for Main Street
Irish Water, working in partnership with Wexford County Council, is replacing ageing water mains in Main Street, Ferns, Co Wexford to provide a more reliable water supply, improve water quality and reduce high levels of leakage. The replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area. The works will begin on Tuesday July 16 and are due for completion by September 2019.
Involves replacing over 298 metres of water mains
The works involve the replacement of over 298 metres of old cast iron water mains with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes. These works are being carried out as part of our National Leakage Reduction Programme which will see over €500 million invested in the public water network over the next four years. The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.
Mark O’Duffy, Network Programme Regional Lead
“The proposed works are extremely important in terms of the safety and security of supply to the homes and businesses of Ferns. The size and scale of the challenge that leakage presents is clear but we have a plan to tackle the issue and we are working in partnership with the Local Authority and our contractors to save significant amounts of water”
The benefits include;
- Improved water quality – Replacing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network with new modern pipes will reduce the risk of contamination.
- Reduced Leaks – Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.
Residents and businesses in the area to benefit from the planned improvements have been notified directly and customers can phone us on Callsave 1850 278 278 if they have any questions about the project. We regret any inconvenience these necessary water network improvements may cause. Details of any supply interruptions associated to this project will be updated regularly on the Water Supply Updates section of our website. The works will be carried out on our behalf by Coffey Northumbrian Ltd.
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management will be in place during this time. A road closure on Main Street Upper will be in place for the duration of the works with local diversions in place. Local access will be maintained at all times.
