Irish Water, working in partnership with Wexford County Council, has signed a contract for the delivery of the Gorey Regional Water Supply Scheme. The works will be carried out by Glan Agua Limited on behalf of Irish Water and will take approximately 18 months to complete.

This project will increase capacity to the area in order to facilitate growth and development as well as safeguarding the water supply for the future. This project will benefit businesses and residents of Gorey and the surrounding areas through the improvement of the drinking water quality and ensuring security of water supplies in the north Wexford region.

What will the works involve

The works include new groundwater production wells, a new water treatment plant (WTP) and reservoir at Ballyminaun, upgrades works to the Barnadown pumping station and associated interconnecting infrastructure.

Irish Water’s Infrastructure Programme Regional Lead Lisa Cogan said “This is a great day for Gorey and indeed for the surrounding areas. Gorey is a busy, thriving town that sees a large influx of tourists each summer. The existing scheme, supplied from three sources at Creagh Water Treatment Plant, Barnadown Wellfield and South Wellfield is operating at maximum capacity and requires significant investment. This project with an investment of €16.4 million will ensure homes and businesses in the area will have a secure, safe and reliable water supply for the future and can accommodate growth.”

What are the benefits

The benefits of the new supply scheme will include an improvement in drinking water quality; safeguard the drinking water supply to a population in excess of 16,000, deliver significant improvements in network performance and level of customer service in terms of security of supply and water quality. It will also allow for the further expansion of Gorey town and surrounding area and compliance with current Drinking Water Regulations.

The proposed new WTP will be constructed on a greenfield site at Ballyminaun and the proposed reservoir will be constructed on a greenfield site adjacent to the WTP also at Ballyminaun. The upgrade works to the pumping station will be completed at the existing Barnadown pumping station with the old WTPs at Barnadown and Coolishall being decommissioned. The works are scheduled to commence in the coming months.
