Upgrade of Ardsbeg Water Treatment Plant completed following considerable investment by Irish Water

Irish Water is delighted to announce that works to upgrade the Ardsbeg Water Treatment Plant have been completed following a €4.1 million investment. These works are ensuring an improved and more reliable quality of water for 5,000 customers in the Gortahork and Falcarragh areas as well as a better security of supply. The scheme has now been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List, which it was included on for elevated levels of aluminium and THMs.

Speaking about the project David McLoone from Irish Water said “We are delighted to have completed these works and look forward to celebrating with the local community at the official opening of the plant in the coming months.

“This project involved the decommissioning of the existing Ardsbeg Water Treatment Plant following the construction of a new water treatment plant adjacent to the existing site and will ensure a safer, more secure and improved drinking water supply for our customers in that area.”

What does the upgrade involve?

The new treatment plant comprises a robust flocculation, coagulation, filtration process and UV disinfection system. These necessary upgrades ensure a fit for purpose water supply for the area.

The new plant has a design output of 1,800m³ per day serving a population of 5,000 local customers. This project also included the construction of a new treated water storage reservoir which has provided much improved security of supply for the local residents.

EPS completed the contract on our behalf and the project was delivered in partnership with Donegal County Council.

Irish Water’s Investment Plan

This project forms part of Irish Water’s investment plan. Works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5 billion investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.

Feabhas tagtha ar an soláthar uisce do 5,000 custaiméir i nGort an Choirce agus ar an bhFál Carrach tar éis uasghrádú €4.1m ag Uisce Éireann

Tá lúcháir ar Uisce Éireann a fhógairt gur cuireadh oibreacha chun Ionad Cóireála Uisce na hArdadh Bige a uasghrádú i gcrích tar éis infheistíocht €4.1 milliún. A bhuí leis na hoibreacha sin, bíonn cáilíocht uisce níos fearr agus níos iontaofa agus soláthar níos sláine á gcinntiú do 5,000 custaiméir i gceantair Ghort an Choirce agus an Fháil Charraigh. Dá bharr sin, baineadh an scéim de Liosta Gníomhaíochta Feabhais na Gníomhaireachta um Chaomhnú Comhshaoil. Bhí an scéim ar an liosta mar gheall ar na hardleibhéil alúmanaim agus tríhalaimeatán atá le fáil inti.

Ag labhairt dó faoin tionscadal, dúirt David McLoone ó Uisce Éireann “Tá lúcháir orainn na hoibreacha a chur i gcrích agus táimid ag tnúth le iad a cheiliúradh leis an bpobal áitiúil ag oscailt oifigiúil an ionaid sna míonna atá romhainn.

“Ba é a bhí i gceist leis an tionscadal gur díchoimisiúnaíodh an tIonad Cóireála Uisce a bhí ann cheana i gceantar na hArdadh Bige tar éis ionad nua cóireála uisce a thógáil in aice leis agus is é an toradh atá air go bhfaighidh ár gcustaiméirí sa cheantar seo soláthar uisce óil atá níos sábháilte, níos sláine agus níos fearr.”

Is é atá san ionad nua cóireála ná próiseas láidir flocasaithe, téachta agus scagacháin agus córas dífhabhtúcháin ultraivialait. Ba ghá na huasghráduithe sin a dhéanamh chun soláthar uisce atá oiriúnach don fheidhm a chinntiú don cheantar.

Is féidir leis an ionad nua 1,800 m3 a aschur in aghaidh an lae chun freastal ar 5,000 tomhaltóir áitiúla. Tógadh taiscumar nua stórála uisce chóireáilte mar chuid den tionscadal freisin agus tháinig feabhas suntasach ar shlándáil an tsoláthair do chónaitheoirí dá bharr.

Chuir EPS an conradh i gcrích thar ceann Uisce Éireann agus soláthraíodh an tionscadal i gcomhpháirt le Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall.

Cuid de phlean infheistíochta Uisce Éireann is ea an tionscadal seo. Cuireadh oibreacha in ord tosaíochta chun aghaidh a thabhairt ar na fadhbanna is criticiúla, ar aon dul leis na gealltanais atá leagtha amach i bPlean Gnó Uisce Éireann. Is é a bheidh i gceist le soláthar an phlean gnó ná infheistíocht €5.5 billiún i gcaiteachas caipitil ar cháilíocht agus acmhainn an uisce óil agus an fhuíolluisce agus ar bhonneagar nua go dtí an bhliain 2021.
