€215,000 project has improved the quality and security of supply for residents

Irish Water has connected properties in Pearse Brothers Park, Ballyboden and Limekiln Road, Greenhills to new water mains to improve the water quality and security of the water supply for residents. The old cast iron water mains were prone to frequent bursts causing a loss of water supply for customers. The €215,000 investment included the laying of new water mains on the road in front of properties and new connections for properties to the water main. The work was carried out on behalf of Irish Water by DJ O’Neill Limited, and took 18 weeks to complete.

One of the benefits of replacing the ageing water mains for residents, which were first installed in the 1950’s, is the removal of any incidents of discolouration in the water supply. This can occur when water passes through old cast iron pipes. Other project outcomes include improved security of the water supply for customers, improved water pressure to properties, and reduced disruption to customers as leakage on the network has been reduced. The replacement of the old cast iron mains will also deliver financial savings as there will be less ongoing maintenance costs associated with the upgraded pipelines.

Commenting on the investment Ivan Corcoran, Capital Programmes Lead, East and Midlands Region, said “The installation of the new water mains on Pearse Brothers Park and on Limekiln Road has improved water quality and ensured a more reliable and secure water supply for customers. Residents will also benefit from improved water pressure to their properties and any incidents of discoloured water that can occur from old cast iron water mains will have been removed from this section of the network. This project is part of our ongoing investment in Ireland’s water infrastructure”.

Irish Water spent over €530 million on water services in 2016. Capital investment in the region of €700 million per year is needed for a sustained period of several decades to address the poor condition of Ireland’s water infrastructure. Works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan up to 2021. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5bn investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021 while achieving efficiencies of €1.6bn.
