Works have addressed the structural defects in the antiquated wastewater network

Irish Water, working in partnership with Cork County Council, is continuing its work to safeguard the wastewater network in Cork by upgrading the sewer network in Mallow and Mitchelstown. The recently completed works were carried out by Underground System and Sewer Repair Ltd. on behalf of Irish Water.

These sewer rehabilitation works have addressed the structural defects in the antiquated wastewater network. This will benefit local residents and business owners by significantly reducing the likelihood of sewer collapses and blockages and reduce potential sewer flooding and odour issues.

Inappropriate items e.g. wet wipes, cotton pads and FOGs were removed

The sewer networks were cleaned in order to undertake an accurate inspection and any blockages caused by inappropriate items (e.g. wet wipes, cotton pads, fats, oils and greases etc.) were removed.

Almost 15 kilometres of the network were surveyed by CCTV to determine their condition and the extent of any defects. All defects were relined and almost 8 kilometres of the network was upgraded.

Non-dig technology used which reduced the impact on community

The works were carried out using non-dig technology which reduced the impact to residents and business owners and minimised traffic disruption in the towns.
Sean Twohig, Capital Programmes Regional Lead said, “Irish Water faces a serious challenge with the size and scale of issues with the wastewater network. A sewer network that is fit for purpose is essential in order to support business and social development in these towns and these works will facilitate ongoing growth. The upgrade works in Mallow and Mitchelstown will benefit local residents and business owners as the performance level of the sewer network in the towns have been significantly improved.”

This project forms part of Irish Water’s investment plan where works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s business plan. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5bn investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.
