€2 million contract to upgrade Galway sewers
Upgrade will benefit businesses and residents in the city centre
Irish Water, working in partnership with Galway City Council, is investing €2 million to upgrade the sewers in Galway City.
GMC Contractors have been awarded the contract for this essential project which will address odour issues during storm water events, reduce sewer flooding and upgrade the sewers for the benefit of businesses and residents in the city centre.
Areas to receive the upgrade
The areas to receive the upgrade include William Street, Shop Street, High Street, Cross Street, Augustine Street, and Flood Street.
Commenting on the project Eunan Canavan, Capital Programme Regional Lead, said “This is an essential project for Galway City and in delivering it we are mindful of the impact the works could have on businesses. Because of this no works will be carried out during the month of December in order to avoid traffic congestion during the Christmas period. There will also be no works on William Street/Shop Street/High Street during July and August in order to avoid disruption during the peak tourist season.
Irish Water and the contractors will make every effort to ensure odours are kept to a minimum and trenchless techniques will be used for this project in order to reduce impact on businesses and residents.”
What will the works involve?
The works will involve the relining of the existing masonry sewer with a new pre-cast plastic sleeve. Before this can take place however sewer cleaning and site investigation works are required. The relining works will then be carried out in phases in order to mitigate against potential impacts to businesses and residents. Relining will be undertaken using non-dig technology to minimise the impact of the works. Some local excavations will be required to provide proper access to the sewers to allow the relining to take place.
The sewer cleaning, CCTV surveys and site investigation works are due to be carried out between July and October with the liner installation works programmed from January to July 2019. Where appropriate these works will take place at night time.
Irish Water, GMC and Galway City Council will agree a traffic management plan before the works commence. A drop-in information evening for businesses will be held in the coming weeks and invitations will be issued to the business representative groups and elected representatives.
