Irish Water is striving to replace those meters that have become end of life with new meters that have automatic meter reading enabled technology to allow these meters to be read in drive-by mode. Meter replacements are being carried out at a national level and will present many benefits to both our customers and Irish Water. The new meters will provide invaluable data sufficient to understand customer consumption, reduce unaccounted for water and identify potential leaks at individual properties, thus supporting Irish Water’s overarching ambition of water conservation. 

An AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) meter is fitted with a transmission device that can send meter data back to a central collection point wirelessly via a handheld device. Irish Water staff can use this hand held device from inside their vehicles. This eliminates the need for Irish Water employees entering private property to take meter readings.

The meter replacement is for all non-domestic meters. Therefore, if you are an Irish Water mixed use customer your meter will be replaced.

This programme is for meter replacement only. Old meters that have come to the end of their natural lifespan will be replaced. Billing arrangements will not be affected by this operation.

Irish Water normally reads all business meters. This is important for leak detection, consumption trends and also to ensure more frequent and therefore more accurate billing for the customer (less estimated bills). Irish Water will send out notifications to you before meter replacement works commence. A representative of Irish Water will call to you before the meter is replaced and will explain what needs to be done. Your cooperation is much appreciated.

If you run a business then you should have a business account with Irish Water. Please contact Irish Water on 1850 278 278. Historically, this account would have been with your Local Authority or its agent. Representatives of Irish Water will be carrying out a pre works survey and will call to your premises where they will ask you some basic questions about your premises, your Eircode and to confirm the business owner. Your cooperation would be very much appreciated.

The contractor working on behalf of Irish Water who will be replacing your meter will call to you and let you know that they are caring out meter replacement works. They will need to turn the water off for about 20 minutes during this process. When the replacement has been completed they will again call in and let you know that the water is back on again. This will give you an opportunity to turn off any machinery requiring a water feed.

The meter replacement should take just 20 minutes and your water supply will be interrupted during this period of time. If the boundary box also needs to be replaced the works may take up to 4 hours but you will still only be without water for about 30 minutes. The contractor working on behalf of Irish Water will let you when they are turning off and then turning back on the water

Irish Water has appointed contractors to carry out the meter replacement. Their van will be in the vicinity of your premises.

The contractor will have a ID which will show that they are working on the Irish Water meter replacement project. They will also have a letter for you from Irish Water telling you about the meter replacement in your business. You will be notified that meter replacement will be carried out in your area well in advance of the meter replacement. Additionally, 14 days in advance of the meter replacement and again within 2 days of the works commencing in your area. On the day of the meter replacement the contractor will call in to you and let you know when the water is being turned off and when it is turned on again. This should give you time to organise your day. If you have any concerns on the day have a chat with the contractor and he may be able to delay the meter replacement to suit you.

It is best if you are available to speak to the contractor on the day so that the meter can be changed out and checked to make sure it is working properly. If you are not available when the water is being turned on again we may have to leave it off until you return.

Ideally the business owner should be there to allow Irish Water entry to the premises to check the water. Irish Water is replacing meters that have come to the end of their natural lifespan with new meters that have AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) technology. AMR meters are fitted with transmitters that can send water meter readings to Irish Water vehicles as they “drive by” each property. The new meters integrate readings with the Irish Water billing software, providing detailed reporting and analytical functionality. This in turn will allow for more accurate and timely billing for customers.

The old meters will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
