Irish Water is committed to supporting the education and engagement of primary and secondary school students in water conservation and efficiency throughout Ireland. Green-Schools, run by An Taisce, is Ireland’s largest and most successful environmental education programme.

Working with over 93% of primary and secondary schools in the country, it embrace long-term action for the environment, encouraging schools to take environmental topics from the curriculum and include them in every day life. It aims to make environmental awareness and protection a key part of school as well as at home and in the wider community.

Water Theme

Through our partnership with Green-Schools we sponsor the Water Theme, helping thousands of schools across the country increase their awareness of water conservation. The Water Theme involves developing awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this important resource in our schools and at home.

We are delighted to be working with schools throughout the country to ensure we are all more aware and mindful of our water use, in school, at home and in our local communities.

Green Flag Award

Schools awarded the Green Flag for the Water Theme show that on average they decreased the amount of water consumed by a third. This is achieved through actions including increasing user awareness, installation of water displacement devices, rainwater collection, and installing water saving devices. Since it began, the Water Theme has reached over 445,000 students and 35,000 teachers.

We would like to thank the Green-Schools programme and all participating schools for their commitment to water conservation and protection.
